Essential 1
Know the chords
See the I, IV and V under your fingers so you always know where home is.
No soloing yet. The chords tell you which notes matter.

Flirt with the third
The third is the money note. Approach it from a half step below and a half step above, on every chord.
This is the one move that makes a line sound like blues instead of a scale.
Essential 3
The BB box
The little shape BB King lived in, and why it works over every chord in the form.
Leave silence between each lick. End your licks on chord tones.
Essential 4
Up major, down minor
Go up the major pentatonic and come down the minor pentatonic.
Mix the two until they blend into one sound and your solo has a direction.
